New initiatives include a Kering-powered sustainable design project and weaving and dye collaborations with US-based artisans at the Jan. 21-22 show at Pier 36/Basketball City

Brands and retailers visiting the Jan. 21-22 run of Kingpins New York at Pier 36/Basketball City will find a highly curated selection of exhibitors representing the most-innovative companies in the international global supply chain.

Kingpins, the original denim trade show, consistently offers a mix of business networking opportunities with global denim mills, manufacturing and other suppliers. The show also curates opportunities for inspiration, education and discovery to help denim makers plan their collections and research burgeoning trends in one central location.

In addition to finding the top denim international denim suppliers, visitors to the show will have access to the latest trend forecast from Be Disobedient. In addition, Be Disobedient’s analysts will be providing their “Trend Picks” among Kingpins’ Gallery space, which focuses on the latest fabric, manufacturing and finishing developments from show exhibitors.

Among the new initiatives at the show is the S|STYLE – DENIM LAB powered by KERING. Under the direction of  S|STYLE – DENIM LAB Giorgia Cantarini, the project is an independent platform for emerging creatives to showcase their work using sustainable criteria. Cantarini worked with Kering, the luxury powerhouse, which owns brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, McQueen and Brioni, for the latest edition, which focuses  on denim and responsible water management. S|STYLE project designers experimented with advanced dyeing, washing and regenerative cotton solutions provided by Kering’s Material Innovation Lab (MIL), in collaboration with PureDenim and Tonello.

In The Boxes, Kingpins’ area for creative collaboration, AGI Denim worked with fiber artist and masterweaver Mahmoud Kosyaem, originally from Aleppo, Syria, and his Brooklyn-based weaving workshop CreativeMindsBK. Together they are showing how discarded denim scraps are used to create beautiful, highly tactile tapestries that tell a compelling story about sustainability and the creative process.

Italian technology company Tonello also tapped a US-based artist for an installation, titled Botanical Alchemy by Tonello x MN Natural Dye Studio.

Textile artist Maegan Neubeck, owner of Narrowsburgh, NY-based MN Natural Dye Studio, uses botanical dyes and responsibly sourced raw materials in her designs. Her studio also assists brands and artisans develop natural dye and sustainable wash programs.

For Botanical Alchemy, Neubeck used organic matter and plant-based waste to transform garments into a study of color and a dialogue about nature.
